December 16 – Friendship How has a friend changed you or your perspective on the world this year? Was this change gradual, or a sudden burst? (Author: Martha Mihalick)
A friend of mine recounted to me, in an e-mail, the Raymond K. Hessel scene from Fight Club. I searched but wasn’t able to find a clip from the movie, so here’s a re-enactment instead:
To be clear, I don’t think my life is in danger. But I took the point my friend was trying to make.
If the choice we have is between death and doing what you really want to be doing, shouldn’t we all choose the latter? But how many of us, instead, choose the long, slow death of doing what we’ve always done because we’ve always done it? Because it’s safe and familiar and stable. That’s certainly been my M.O..
My 35th birthday is in a little over six weeks and I think that’s a fine time line for being on my way to wherever it is I want to be. I don’t want Tyler Durden showing up on my doorstep.
