Thanks for your comment, Isabelle! And yes, it would be nice to hear from men on this, though I’ve generally been left with the impression that men are just much better at compartmentalizing their casual sex than women are. Whether it’s biological or social or both (probably), they just seem far more able to take the sex without attaching any strings. I’ve finally come to a point in my life where I pretty much refuse to do the fuck buddy thing anymore; I just find it too emotionally difficult. Maybe if I grow a penis someday though, I’ll give it another try!

2 years later this still makes so much sense! Yes, the play by ear thing is so complicated, and I think that what requires so much head space can also be something other than just being plain attached, because in that case you can always go to them and say you’ve fallen in love and see what happens. What I find tiring and thought consuming is to be constantly evaluating the feelings for the guy, am I getting attached, am I still convinced he’s so flawed that I don’t want a relationship with him and so on. Probably because of the grey area thing and always leaving the possibility open that they might become more than a fuck buddy. Maybe men are more successful in seeing it plain and clear as just sex, even if they have to repress some feelings every now and then to keep it that simple. Would be nice to hear from a man on that.
